The cave was discovered on August 4, 1939 by workers who were blasting limestone in the quarry on the Brigham Farm. A blast revealed a great underground cavern. It was opened to the public as a cave in May 1940 and in the first 8 weeks, 59,000 visitors arrived.
The Cave of the Mounds is over 1 million years old and one of the best day trips in the Midwest. It is a National Natural Landmark and the best examples of the region’s natural limestone cave. The Cave’s quantity and quality of its speleothems and the extraordinary colors make it the "jewel box" of America’s major caves. It is a unique geologic formation and has the most beautiful show caving in the midwest!

The Cave has a 50 degree F temperature everyday of the year. It was formed as acidic water dissolved the 400 million-year old limestone bedrock far underground. The lower portion of the Cave was formed by the rushing water of an underground stream.
