INTERNATIONAL CRANE FOUNDATION, BARABOO WI, B AND B HOTEL LODGING

The International Crane Foundation (ICF) preserves a future for all crane species near Baraboo, Wisconsin. ICF works worldwide through educational programs, workshops, research support, captive management and propagation and conservation activities to conserve cranes, their wetlands and grassland ecosystems on which cranes depend. Visit the Crane Foundation from Cameo Rose – a Madison WI area B and B and Victorian country inn.

The international Crane Foundation programs stress the interdependence between wildlife, their habitats and people: “We believe that cranes can serve as a symbol inspiring people from many nations to trust each other and to work together to conserve these magnificent birds.” Governments should adopt this mission for people.

ICF was founded by Ron Sauey and George Archibald in 1973 when little was known about the breeding biology of cranes. They believed that breeding cranes in captivity was on important step toward safeguarding them in the wild.

There efforts have led to bringing attention to the plight of the Siberian crane and protecting their winter wetlands in India; protecting marshes in Japan where a flock of the endangered red-crowned cranes nested; saving a critical wintering and migratory area for white-naped cranes located in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas; hatching the first red-crowned crane in the western hemisphere and the first hooded crane to ever hatch in captivity; Brolgas hatched for the first time in North America; the first Siberian crane ever bred in captivity; the pioneering of "isolation rearing" efforts to release captive cranes into the wild; and they received black-necked cranes, thus making it the only facility in the world to have all fifteen crane species.

In 1989 ICF received half of the the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center flock of all captive whooping cranes. In 1993 ICF became the first institution to have successfully bred all fifteen crane species.

In 2001, ICF began using ultralight aircraft to guide young whooping cranes on migration from Wisconsin to Florida.
