MERRIMAC WISCONSIN FERRY, ATTRACTIONS, THINGS TO DO:

The Merrimac Ferry crosses the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties and between Okee on the east bank and Merrimac on the west. Crossing time is about 7 minutes. The ferry can carry 15 vehicles. It is free.

Private ferry service had began in 1844. The ferry then carried horse and buggy and passengers for a small fee between 35 cents and $1. Manpower primarily operated the ferry until about 1900 when a gasoline engine was added.

In 1933 the ferry was acquired by the old State Highway Commission and has operated as a free ferry since Columbia and Sauk counties turned it over to the state without charge. It has survived several bridge construction plans as residents of Merrimac once formed an "I Believe in Ferries" club in protest. Even a new nearby I-90 freeway could not overcome the nostalgia factor of the Merrimac Free Ferry.
