Joseph Goodrich, an abolitionist founded Milton WI, built the first frame house and Milton College and built an 1844 hexagonal stagecoach inn called the Milton House. The inn was constructed of "grout," and is considered the oldest building of its type in the U.S. Its' basement and tunnel served as one of 14 stops along the Underground Railroad. Today, the Milton House is a museum.
