Monona was incorporated as a Village on August 29, 1938.
During the 1950's the Village grew 231% or more than any other community in the State during the decade. In 1969, Monona changed to a city. With rapid growth, the city became landlocked by the City of Madison and bodies of water.
In 1940s an Indian Mound was unintentionally cut into during street construction and skeletons were uncovered. This Indian burial mound was thought to have been built around 2,000 years ago. A State of Wisconsin historical marker was placed at this site in 1998. The area where the mound was discovered became known as Indian Mounds Park. It is located at the corner of Midwood and Ridgewood Avenues.
