Indian Agency House was built in 1832 above the Portage Canal located off Highway 33 east of Portage on Agency House Road. Industrial Waterfront District includes commercial buildings and the old Feed Mill (1861) that were constructed around the Portage Canal that ran through the center of the city. Museum at the Portage - The William L. and Zona Gale Breese home at 804 MacFarlane became in 1996 the Museum at the Portage to display the history of the city. Portage Canal, the one and four-tenths mile trail located between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River was marshy and during high water would allow boats to paddle from one river to the other. It is a unique natural water-shed or "continental divide" as the Fox River flows from South to North emptying into Lake Michigan and St. Lawrence to Atlantic; and the Wisconsin River flows from North to South emptying into the Mississippi - Gulf of Mexico.
