The original Capitol was a rented building in Belmont in 1836. The Madison site was chosen and building built in 1838 and replaced in 1863. A fire left the second Madison Capitol badly damaged and a new Capitol built between 1906 and 1917 at a cost of $7.25 million.
It is over 200 feet, with the only State Capitol granite dome and topped by a gilded bronze statue, "Wisconsin." Included in the building are the Governor chambers, the State Supreme Court room, Senate Chamber and the Assembly Chamber all elegantly decorated and furnished.
Open to the public weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Free tours are offered daily, year round except on certain holidays.
